I truly enjoy music of all kinds. I love syphonic music, jazz, pop, rock & country. I am often very careful to watch what I put into my head with music. Like many young adults, I often find myself humming something from the top 40. Lately instead of humming, I've been trying to find the true meaning behind songs. (Trust me, not always the best idea) I'll leave all of you readers to find the true meaning of some songs, because it's really a personal thing.
A few weeks ago, I did a weekend retreat with a group of high school youth. They threw a hissy fit when I told them (with a beaming smile) that we would be listening to church appropriate music the whole trip (four hours) there and back. I'm not saying I never ever rock out to some Kenny Chensey, or even *gasp* other non Christian music, but I think on a church trip like that, it's important to keep focused!
So, I popped in Barlowgirl, Fireflight, Toby Mac and a few close to my heart artists that I deemed "cool". Oh was I proved wrong. I thought I was going to lose the entire back seat my car from the "Oh no you didn't" looks coming my way. My reaction? Crank it up, and make embarassing gestures (like dancing) around other cars.
Now, I must admit something. We had a great weekend AND on the way back, we actually all rocked out in the car (dancing) around other cars. But I still have the few that believe what they listen to doesn't affect them in the least. I'm not going to get overly concerned, but I do wish that someone would have expressed something to me about the obscene, tasteless, and disrespectful music I listened to.
That being said, not all music is bad. In fact, you'll that my music collection is about half and half. But I have mad the decision to turn some of my cd's into coasters, or nice craft projects.
